Quickie Poetry: A Momentary Drama

Sometimes it returns. Flashes of images. Questions nagging for answers.
Sometimes it rears its ugly head. Flashes its fangs and bites deep.

You find yourself wondering what triggered it, given such a wonderful day.
Was it Murakami and his Wind-Up Bird Chronicles?
Was it a fleeting dream whose visions are now too faint to recall?
Was it the memory of a friend you never got to know?

Sometimes you shake away the thoughts. You remind yourself that's over. You shrug and just move on.
Sometimes, however, you don't.

Instead you think of how calculating the move was:
How the use of pain and loss was twisted to seduce and steal.
How the illusion of reconciliation and openness was merely a feint
to a deep backstabbing wound meant to never heal.

Sometimes it returns. And it does with such a vengeance
you will only survive it by reminding yourself what is true.

The past is the past. The present is far more real.
(And what is real is that things are absolutely fantastic.)
And while, unlike in Dorothy's tale, the Witch isn't dead yet,
you have to remind yourself:

You don't have to carry the house on your shoulders the whole time

The strange transformation of Zac

Admittedly, I find myself wondering how Zac Efron has transformed himself into someone who I actually do find attractive. While I am one of the few people among my circle of friends who actually enjoyed the first High School Musical movie, I never really found him to be attractive at all. His face made me always think "strange mannequin with Michael Jackson-esque qualities to his features."

Then this happened.

And I found myself suddenly thinking, "Oh wow.. this is really a MAN. Sensitive eyes with a great full face of fuzz." Suddenly, Zac ceased to be what we Filipinos call a "Hipon" (or a Shrimp). The term is meant to refer to guys who have fantastic bodies but have a head that's best disposed of.

Now, the beauty of this transformation is while he may no longer look the waif that my partner, rOckY, likes:

He still has come to a great middle ground of being the twinkie-do my partner loves...

And the kind of man I like.

So yeah, Zac Efron, here's to seeing your upcoming movies.

Bad Dream: The Fight for our Rights continues

Woke up feeling pretty frustrated and slightly angry today from a dream which touched on a number of personal topics. The dream started with me and my sister Tracy standing at some street corner with a pair of wigs on. I wore this weird brown wavy number while she wore this blonde tall wig. And you know how in dreams, you "know" why something is happening? Well, in this case it was me "knowing" it was because she had no time to fix her hair before we stepped out, so good thing I "had" wigs in my bag. WTF right? Anyway, we walked down a few blocks and eventually stopped at a bus station which had a mirror-like wall. There, we saw how bad the wigs looked and noticed they had heated the air between them and our heads that our heads now looked nicely stylishly done. So we removed the wigs and waited for the bus.

While waiting, I noticed down the road my ex-girlfriend walking with her family. I then realized that in the dream, we were in Canada. I felt worried that if they saw me, I would ruin their Christmas. (This is the point in the dream I "knew" it was set during the Christmas season). So I ducked behind the waiting seats so they wouldn't see me. My sister looked at me oddly and told me the bus was here. So I stood up and hurriedly boarded the bus, but in my eagerness to get on board, two things happened: 1) She noticed me and turned away, with a frown on her face. 2) my clothes somehow got all left behind. So I boarded the bus with nothing but a towel around my waist.

In the bus, my family was there. My mom and dad were on the rearmost seat. My brother, Ate Ives, and the two kids Sophie and Jam were there on the next row. And finally it was me and Tracy. Behind us, a lot of other people. This was the part that got painfully frustrating for me. In the dream, my mom suddenly starts talking about how, "It is annoying how you have these people who think they have the right to be married."

I realized suddenly she was referring to marriage being given as a right to gay people like me. Suddenly I realized that was why we were in Canada. In the dream, it was to attend the wedding of someone, and there happened to also be a wedding between two guys in the horizon.

I spoke up, "I think it is more about how sad that there are people who think others should not have that right."

My mom, in the dream, shook her head and said, "Ay, I will say no more about it."

But this time I pressed on.

"You know how back in the older times, women were not permitted to work, or show their clothing, or how pork and shellfish was not permitted, or how playing with pig skin was even seen as wrong. These are all in the Bible too. But now, these are either considered normal or acceptable. Why? Because they REVISED it."

My mom chided in, "Exactly they revised it... but no one has revised that gay people should.."

I interrupted, "But that's my point. The only reason people view that we can't get married is because no one has revised it yet. All are just falling back on the "it is traditionally seen as wrong" as an excuse. There is no actual logical reasoning behind it. And that's what is sad."

My mom, in the dream, looked away in contained disappointment.

I still pressed on. "Women made a stand. They expected equality, and perhaps it hasn't been fully won, but it has been enough that women do have the freedom to get jobs now. Women do have a recognizable role now outside just being the housewife. Women gained a voice. Now, it is our turn to gain a voice. Our turn to expect revisions to what has simply been excused away as tradition. It is our turn to be given the right to be treated as equally as EVERYONE ELSE."

They remained silent. I felt so angry I wanted to scream.
But then I woke up...

... to a phone call from my Mom reminding me I had to go to Paranaque today for my Dad's birthday mass and dinner. Yep. Can you imagine the struggle I felt with my emotions being raw that moment and the phone in my hand just a few key presses away from contacting her. Gah. I didn't answer. I just cooled my head off, then texted back, "I'll be there."

That was in some ways cathartic. But in some ways, a reminder of the truth of where I do stand in life so far. I am very happy to be sharing my life with rOckY. I am very lucky to be with a family that still accepts and loves me. I am very fortunate to have lived my life as I have, with every single experience adding up to what made me who I am. But I shouldn't forget that there are still some emotional issues that are, out of courtesy or whatever other reasons, do stay mum about their own emotional conflicts with me. And that's just the way it really is. People deal with things in their own way.

And maybe, just maybe, we all learn to open our eyes a little bit more.
See the bigger picture. And embrace what truly is best for everyone.

review: 306

I received a comment some posts back which invited me to check out a film called "306" after a quick email check to see if it was just some spam bot, I decided to try watching it with my partner. The film, by Elliot London, follows a day in the life of Eric who seems to be a student with a secret of his own. The shots are meticulously taken with nice attention to framing and color. (I felt bad though when I thought I saw a continuity error when the phone flips from vertical to horizontal at one point when Eric receives and writes a text message). A lot of nice camera angles populate the film, with shots that tease just enough without giving away too much.

Lovely lighting. Really lovely use of lights and the touch of shadows. I also like how the extras were very full of character without being caricatures or distracting. And the locations were very nice (save for a small gripe in the end as I mentioned below).

But as impressive as the film looks, I have to admit I had some issues with it. The lead, played by Scott-Lynch Giddings (i think since his name does come first in the credits after the Writer-Producer-Director), does have some acting chops but still needs to refine his ability to convey emotions. The scene on the couch (which is previewed in the vimeo still image below) looked a tad more campy than was perhaps intended. And the scenes that followed prior to the big "reveal" in the end felt overly dramatic to me.

The music was nice, although expected given the art-film approach the short has. The choice of using Clair De Lune - Claude Debussy was kind of predictable. I have to commend the film maker though for nicely timing the music to hit the perfect mark in the end of the short film.

I didn't quite get the need for showing how boring his student life is. I didn't see how it related to the story at all, other than to serve as a filler til the real meat of the narrative was achieved. Did his boredom with how school life flows lead to the latter half of the movie? I felt it was there only to fill the space needed before the "big reveals" since the reveals affected what could be showed.

Here's the short film, for those who want to see it. Be warned, after the video, I continue on the review with a much more spoiler filled elaboration. So be warned. But do find time to watch this short. It is definitely worth a see. Just keep in mind, there is some nudity, so it is definitely NOT safe for work.

I hope that's adequate warning for those who want to keep away from any spoilers from this beautifully crafter film.

And yes, I do mean that with all my heart: This film is beautifully crafted. The shots are like paintings in how they are composed. The camera knows how to reveal things, whether it be the name Sam and Eric on the refrigerator door or the idea of how pressured Eric feels with the composition of the school shots.

But the film, sadly, is very deceptive. First of all, it calls itself "306 Short Gay Film" when clearly it isn't one. The main point of the title is to deceive the viewer at the beginning and reinforce the illusion to make the end reveal gimmick work. A gay film isn't any film that has gay sex in it. A gay film definitely isn't any film that contains male prostitution in it. A gay film is a film that explores the life or a part of the life of a gay person, which typically does mean the main character in the film is gay (whether it mean he already is gay, still is in the process of coming out, or is greatly in the denial phase of being gay.) None of that seem to apply in this film at all, unless one really stretches the idea and considers Eric to be a bisexual guy in a straight relationship with a woman he loves, and is doing gay sex to make ends meet. And that, quite frankly is a stretch of a connection to make, given how he clearly shows his devotion and love for Sam, and how guilty and dirty he feels about having done gay sex (especially reinforced by the fact he not only SHOWERS while crying in the hotel room where he did the deed, but cleans up AGAIN and washes his face while facing the mirror at home). So does the film want us to see him as a bisexual who has chosen to live a "straighter" life but does "dirty gay sex" because they need the money? I don't know. The job was because he got a text message from a friend who needed him to "cover for him". So I don't think Eric was ever forced to do this to make ends meet. He didn't show any resignation or negative reactions to getting the message from his friend. He did not hesitate to inform Sam that he will be late. It sounded more like it was a job he pretty much was accustomed to doing. Never in all the film do we ever see Eric looking at anyone else who looks remotely gorgeous in the movie. So his sexuality is pretty much the straightest man a straight man can be. Or at least a bisexual guy who is 100% devoted to his woman that he'd get fucked for the money they need. (But since he's studying and since she left early, the idea is she's working, do they need the money?)

Again, what makes this a gay short film? Does a blow job between men immediately make a film a gay film? Does a film exploring a straight guy doing gay sex make this a gay film? Is he a closeted bisexual who loves his woman, but loves gay sex, then has an emotional guilty moment each time after he gets his gay hunger fed? Or did the film maker really just want to have his "Aha!" moment by calling this a short gay film, when in truth, it isn't?

What does the film want to say?

Which brings me to the title. Maybe this is all because I don't get what the title means either. It could be a cultural thing, or a reference I didn't quite grasp. But a quick attempt to see what 306 can mean brings up this list, this list, and this list. I know 306 is an area code in Canada too, so I wonder if the title was meant to refer to that. I can imagine the title could have attempted to be very symbolic and refer to 360, or a full circle, but not reaching that point. The guy fails to completely turn gay again or something. But that feels pushing it. Was it the amount of money he gets? When the cash is handed to Eric's waiting hand, it does look like a wad of bills and some coins. Funny though to have six dollars in change. I guess prostitution has its own taxes to cover?

A quick gripe too on how in the end, we see Eric get home, with his bag in hand, and seemingly blocks the door open with his bag, then uses the bathroom and comes out from the general same spot, making him look like that door was also the door to the bathroom. I know there's supposed to be a bathroom door somewhere off cam on the right, but that was sort of a sloppy shot. Not to mention the way he walks in with his bag makes you think the door was a door from the hallway. But since he keeps it open, it makes one realize it should be a door from the living room or something. Argh.

So over-all, I will end this review this way:

To Ramblergirl, thank you for sharing me the link and asking me to take a look at it. I do apologize if my review above might not be all to your liking, but I do believe you would all appreciate honesty rather an a generic response of flattery that did not try to really look into your work and appreciate it.

To Elliot London, I will again say I admire your sense of composition and the use of the camera. I love the technical aspects of your work. I do still wonder what message was intended and why the film has to be labeled a gay short film. I worry that some might even take offense and accuse you of exploiting the term gay. I hope it has not come to that. And I do look forward to seeing more of your work someday. Hopefully with more thought given to the writing and how over-all a message is delivered. But kudos and congratulations on this creation :-) Making films is never easy. Nor is the inevitable receipt of how viewers react. But hey, you've gotten over 60,000 views already in barely two weeks. That is still cause for celebration!

And to everyone else, I do recommend you watch the film. You might like how the story is portrayed and what techniques were used in telling the story. Definitely worth checking out.

Geekwood: Monkey

Wow... that pose makes me think bad things...

Okay, I have to admit I'm not that familiar with this game yet.
But man I have to say, this guy is making me feel very excited... for many different reasons.

Woof. I say it again. Woof.

The game has motion capture work by Andy Serkis, who is known for his portrayals of Gollum, the smart ape Caesar in Rise of the Planet of the Apes. I wonder though if the game was approached with a very PG audience in mind, or if they indulged in giving some interesting motions to this particular piece of man meat.

The infamous story of the Monkey King.

Being a western reinterpretation of the Chinese story Journey to the West, this game is set 150 years in the future in a post apocalyptic world with the main guy, Monkey, being the character you use. Oh Monkey. You might not be handsome, but man you're built the way men should be.

Any lower and we'd all be smiling.

Then there's your pole. Nicely sturdy pole, it is. In Chinese Legend, the Monkey King's pole could grow and shrink to accommodate whatever needs were required. I wonder if yours does the same.

Aww this could have been the crotch shot. Then again, with the rod out there, there wouldn't be a crotch shot.

Gotta admit too a big plus is the fact you have very nice feet. Most geekwood hunks are pretty lacking in that department. Some have stumps of color. Others have eternally worn shoes. You have feet with nice toes. And yeah, some of us like men with nice feet.

Looks less bulky in actual size, sadly.

So congratulations Monkey, you're on this blog's Geekwood. I must ask though, are you ever going to have some time for monkey business? I got a banana you might wanna try.

We joined this year's Pride March in the Philippines!

rOckY and I, with a LOT of our good friends, took part in this year's Pride March. This was my second time to be part of the march since last year, I was with my parents and family on a trip to Singapore. My best friend Tom and his partner Fritz was there, as was my dear diva Grace and her partner Pao, as was Geoff and Allan. (Thank you Allan for these wonderful pictures!) rOckY has yet to release our own set of pictures but once those are up, know I'll be sharing the link to them too.

There were many other friends who joined us that day who aren't in these pictures. Nono, Lanchie, Juna, Markee, Ian, Bern, Pao and so many other friends also made their presence known and their voices heard as we marched down the road with pink balloons, rainbows and love. Of course, there were protesters against the march there too which was expected. A little bird told us before that those people are "funded" to protest by certain groups. Sad really, that people really think hate is the way to live one's life. There also were companies that showed their support (but part of me does wonder how much is support and how much is selling the idea that you can work for them. Oh well, businesses will always have the bottom line after all.) You can find more pictures of the beautiful event here as well.

Check out this video that rOckY took of the march. Clearly, we were having a LOT of fun.

As I mentioned in my facebook, the Pride March doesn't require attendees to be gay. All you have to be is someone who wants to voice out that LGBT deserve equal rights.

The Secret Recipe to a Relationship

I never thought I would ever come to a point in my life where I can say, "Yes I can cook good food." But ever since I got into this relationship with Rocky, I have found myself in a life where reaching for my dreams seems to be the norm.

Rocky and I now cook more often than buy food outside or have it delivered. While Rocky is good at coming up with delectable soups and very filling pastas, I am thankful he really enjoys my salads and other simpler dishes. Most recently, Rocky has been really loving the Turbo Broiled Chicken that I can make. The recipe was a family favourite which so many people have really appreciated and to be able to cook it now makes me feel very happy.

Since Rocky and I have been taking taking steps to eating healthier, the additions of cooking machines such as the Turbo Broiler and the Slow Cooker Crock Pot are a definite plus. The tricky part is really finding not too difficult but healthy recipes to try.

Which brings me to the topic of relationships:

If you find yourself in a relationship which stifles your growth as a person or forces you to sacrifice your dreams, then maybe it is time to reconsider how you treat yourself. Maybe it is time to get out.

While it is not uncommon for sacrifices to be called for from either party in making a relationship work, all such sacrifices should always be a two-way street. Both should realize the give-and-take nature of a relationship is a constant act of finding ways to keep things balanced. While this doesn't meant counting and tracking every single thing and time you make certain compromises, it does mean being aware that you aren't the only one doing them. Often, I've read facebook status updates and comments from single people complaining about how love has always been unfair to them or how it was time "they took care of themselves more." I sometimes find myself wanting to reach out and tell them, "You know, that's precisely it. You HAVE to take care of yourself more. You have to always keep yourself happy. Because if you don't, you won't have happiness that you will want to share with your partner." The happiness that makes a relationship strong and nourishes it to grow is a happiness that comes from each partner and is shared with each other. Alas, it seems someone has coughed up the cash to pay the reservation fee for the dream house Rocky and I were excited to get. So it seems, either the world has an even better place waiting for us, or the current people are planing to hold on to the house and end up choosing to sell it again once Rocky and I are ready with the money.

Why am I talking such nonsense? Because I don't believe it is nonsense.
Ever since I met Rocky, I've been constantly reminded by events in our relationship about how everything literally does happen for a reason. Cancelled concerts, slight miscommunications, moments that test us, and even the loss of things, places, and people dear to us have all had their own reasons for happening. For some, it can be an emotional reason that needed to go its course. For others, a mental reason that needed to be played out. And others, a physical tangible reason that is necessary for what came next to occur.

Everything happens for a reason.

And so, while it does feel saddening to learn that the house we both pretty much pegged our dream house is now likely to end up owned by someone else, I am not giving up. I do believe we will find the house that we are intended to call our home. And I still am very thankful for the many friends who offered their support, if not offered new job opportunities for me to try to increase my cash flow for the eventual purchase of our home.

The search continues.
The gathering of work continues as well.

And soon.
Rocky and I will find the place where we were meant to live the rest of our lives.
A place we can grow old together.
A place where we can say, "Yes, this is where we belong."

A friend of my partner recently informed us that he saw a link to this blog posted in another site. I have absolutely no complaints of that happening. Quite frankly, I got pretty enthusiastic about the idea that more readers were starting to share the link to this blog to other friends. I posted the other day about the dream house Rocky and I hope to get and I'm happy that many quickly contacted me with supportive suggestions. I've sent my resume out to some of you, and have also replied back to the emails of others. As of now, I have real estate referral options, online publishing options, possible outsourced work, lecture referral options and a few other requests for a portfolio as well.

Thank you so much for the help. More offers and suggestions are always welcome, but it does feel great to know how many friends are out there who are willing to help out.

The baby steps to getting the dream house have begun. I've even gone all the way to Paranaque to speak to my mom about it and heard her suggestions as well. So far, everything seems positive and I can't wait to see how things will evolve.

On the online publishing front, I'm looking at doing some (or maybe even all) of these:

1) Role-playing game related output
I am looking at either coming up with my own table top role-playing game system, which I can then market and sell online at places like drivethrurpg.com and the like. I'm also looking at the SAS (modules) that White Wolf Gaming Studios produces and checking if they allow people to create their own and sell them (the way there was an open license for d20 materials some years back. Alas as that link shows, they don't. They do allow you to send summaries which if they like, can lead to them publishing it.) It is kind of disturbing though how WWGS' submission guidelines link leads to this. Deep down, I'd love to make books in a similar vein to Giovanni Chronicles (like a Toreador Chronicles that starts during the Renaissance era, or a Brujah Chronicles opening with the Fall of Carthage. My favorite idea that I'd love to work on would be a Malkavian Chronicles, which spans from Ancient Rome to the modern days, but the players go through it out-of-sequence to represent a greater madness afflicting them. So every new gaming session, they randomly roll which era they are playing through, and are allowed to use knowledge of sessions played in the future eras as a reflection of them tapping into the Malkavian Madness Network.)

Maybe it is time to have my Lurker system copyrighted and released?

2) Fiction output
I'm looking at getting my Surviving Manila zombie story novel released. I can probably start with releasing Skydiving Without Parachutes. I'm also reconsidering going back to my Dragon series (You can find it's many entries here.)

On the comic side, maybe it is time for Adventures of the Keyboard Kingdom. And my dreams of a short film will best be approached as a comic for now (assuming I can finalize if I want it to be a straight or gay couple).

Either or all can be released for the Kindle as well. Maybe a few free torrents for the curious.

Beyond these, I'm really hoping to land a few new side-line job options which really good friends have contacted me about. If I'm lucky, I'll be able to grab a job that can be accomplished while working at the computer, so it won't force me to abandon other possible offers. Maybe by the Grace and God, things will look better on this end (yes that wordplay was intentional.)

Anyone else looking for property? I have a few great suggestions that are also environmentally friendly.

I SOOOOOO love the Kitchen.

Rocky and I found a house we can dare call our dream house.

The place is pretty awesome, with two floors, a fantastic kitchen, a nice spacious living room, parking for two cars, a cool balcony for any smoking guests, a really cute cabinet-hidden bodega under the stairs, and even a possible makeshift garden area in the back. Honestly, it is a wonderful find given it is within Cubao and quite accessible for both cars and public transport with just enough street-level adjustment to avoid flooding.

I want to be able to call it our home.
I really do.

Rocky surprised me one morning with this change in status.

But admittedly, it is a tad outside my comfortable price range. Alone.
It is also outside Rocky's price range. Alone.

Together, however, the dream becomes a bit more reachable.

But not without help.

Buying a house and lot is always a huge commitment that requires both dedication and a clear mind. The cash amounts involved can make anyone's head spin. The bigger picture of being responsible for an actual house, which includes everything from maintenance, to security, can be staggering. And most of all, there's the decision of whose name the house will be under.

And here's where I need your help, my dear readers.

Here in the Philippines, there is still no official way to get married to your gay partner.
Boasting itself as the remaining Catholic country in South East Asia, the Church still has a very strong stance against homosexual unions. And the government is still pretty much in its infancy when it comes to gay rights. Now, my partner Rocky and I have been together for over two years now, and to be frank, have realized that we have found the person we are excited to spend the rest of our lives with. Neither of us have any plans nor dreams of ever migrating to another country either.

Lasalle + Ateneo = Love

In this country, where we cannot get married, we realize sharing this house, in official documents as the named co-owners is the closest thing we can get to a formal official symbol of our union. Like a marriage, the title of the house becomes an official document that will require from us to stay "together" in this decision, to work as a couple through anything life may throw at us, and to "raise" this house and care for it, and develop it for the years to come. This house, in many ways, is our "Philippine gay marriage".

We're definitely contacting our parents to help us in making this a reality. In many ways, I personally am already expecting some resistance. My parents, as loving and caring and open-minded as they have been about my coming out and my relationship with Rocky, are still hoping for me to find the right girl. Those are points scored for my being a true bisexual I guess. I hope they can see that this desire to share this house with Rocky is me saying, "Yes Mom and Dad, I'm looking at this relationship as something for the rest of my life. This is pretty much like us getting married. Will you help me in doing my part to make this a reality?"

How can you readers help out?

I would love to have more avenues and ways to earn additional income to help with the coming bills and expenses. Unlike Rocky, I have been unemployed for quite some time after working a long stint as a Senior Art Director and a Graphic Artist for ABS-CBN Global Limited. I had quit work in hopes of continuing my dream of a film career, but had to put that in hold to help out in the family business, a "help out" that continues to occupy most of my time which I could have had used instead working in a new job. Not content with this, and knowing I had to do my share in handling the bills and such, I succeeded in finding a job as a freelance writer for a major entertainment network, writing for them and sending them copy work through the net. The pay isn't big, but it does help me settle the bills. I know, however, that if I want this dream house to become a reality, I have to up my game. I have to bring in more money somehow and that's where you readers can help me out.

The easiest would be to be given writing or art-related contractual work offers. I have an extensive range of experience when it comes to advertising, having worked for more than six years at an international company, creating print, televised and new media advertising that targeted audiences and markets in Europe, Middle East, United States and Japan. I've made quite a large range of design work as well, from websites, to banners, logos, billboards, full page ads, ezines, vhs and dvd covers as well as web and television commercials. I can do freehand artwork, photo manipulations and mixed media. I've directed and acted in some short films and I used to even host a webshow called Fandom Live! for a few years. I also do webcomics, ranging from whimsical to dark and broody. I've written poetry, short stories and while this is starting to sound like a resume, I've decide against posting an actual resume because I want to keep this blog post personal and honest, rather than professional and formal sounding.

Very nice.

DC Comics nicely does sometime get it right when they revamp a character. Gail Simone was the person who made Catman the successful hunk he is now, thanks to Villains United and Secret Six. Whether or not this hot slab of feral meat will still exist in the same hotness stream come the new DC Universe remains to be seen.

Catman, while looking most of the time like a more colorful Batman clone, always kept a Sawyer vibe going. With his scruffy looks and his typically less-freshly showered appeal. He used to just be a criminal whose shtick sorta copied Selina Kyle's, but now has turned into a character in his own right.

Gotta note the scars really add to his image.

Gail Simone had released a statement how Catman was supposed to be revealed to be bisexual. It was sad that the story arc exploring that was cancelled (as always) but it is nice to have it declared as true. Adding another macho role-model to bisexuality is always a plus, considering how I grew up with only effeminate men as my role models.

Had he been in Dungeons and Dragons, Catman would qualify as being Lawful Evil or Chaotic Good, considering how the books reflect him as a villain with a moral code, or a hero who is willing to cross lines others do not.

One has to admire a straight man who willingly and openly shows his support for Marriage Equality. More so when the man is one who also holds to his faith, even when his religion might say otherwise.

Admittedly I first noticed him because he was hot.
Then I read about his statement.

Today's Geekwood goes to David Pocock.

David is an Australia rugby union player who has made this tremendously intelligent and empathetic statement:

"I don't see what the big deal is with the whole gay marriage debate in Australia. Being brought up in a Christian home and still identifying as Christian, I get pretty annoyed with the Christian lobbies around the world who say gay marriage destroys the family and all that kind of rubbish. They claim to follow someone who always stood up for the oppressed and marginalised. I guess it is a fear of the unknown - if you talk to someone who doesn't like gay people you can almost guarantee that they don't know too many. These are the prejudices that you have to challenge and break down. Emma and I decided not to get legally married until our gay friends could do the same."

Real Straight guys aren't afraid to have fun.

While most of the time my Geekwood posts have been of fictional characters who get me smiling, I've realized I should also feature hot guys who have brains to match their intensity. And David Pocock has proven that he's one of them with this statement.

Too many people out there are supportive to their gay friends and family members, but when given the chance to stand up and make a statement, choose to remain silent. If it is not talked about, it isn't "as bad" some would say. I'm glad that David has the balls to make such a stand and not be afraid to say what is in his mind.

DADT (Don't Ask, Don't Tell) has finally ended. And we can see how many are embracing the joy of having the freedom and the right to come out and be themselves. Sad and ironic how in other places, like Manila, so many are still too afraid to come out and be proud of who they are. While the rest of the world struggles for the right to be proud of who they are, and for the safety of identifying themselves as gay without a mob literally out to kill them, here we have people who claim "coming out is unimportant" and talk of being recognized as gay as something to be ashamed of.

I am proud to have come out.
Yes, it hasn't been an absolutely smooth ride. Yes, my parents were hurt by the truth, since they did want their son to be straight and have children. But still, there is strength in being recognized for who you are. There is courage in being able to stand up for yourself and say, "I am proud to be me." And there are stronger and deeper bonds that form when your parents learn the truth, and now relate to you with the proper knowledge, and eventually, understanding of who you are as a whole.

I really hope more people realize staying hidden in the closet is no way to truly live.
And I do hope they realize this before it is too late.

I know, I know, I shouldn't rant about something I don't like when so many others do and it does so much more good out there in the world. But honestly, I don't get all the hooplah over the Miss Universe pageant. Currently on both facebook and in many social networks, the running joke is that a "official holiday for gay people" is about to happen or that "all gay employees can request for their sick leave/vacation leave today" with the joke being: Every gay guy loves to watch Miss Universe.

Yeah. Everyone knows what a Miss Universe contestant looks like.

The thing is, I don't.
And I am definitely not straight.
Is it because I am more bisexual than just gay? Maybe it has to do with me seeing beauty pageants as events that celebrate being a specific kind of beauty, and represents glamour and grace as a specific way of acting, and the whole event and all feels very unnecessary and frivolous. And admittedly, it has to do with my dislike of how all this has lead to things like this event which seems to glamorize and support doing this to one's children.

Seriously. And some of these poor children take botox now. Ugh.

Beauty will always, for me, be something everyone has.
Some may have beauty that coincides with what more people define as beautiful than others, while others might have a beauty that takes a more open-minded or less brain-washed mind. I have strong feelings against any group, production or form of media that highlights and celebrates only ONE kind of beauty. Not everyone has to be thin. Not every woman needs that hour-glass figure to be beautiful. But it seems in as much as these pageants harp about "Inner beauty" they do nothing but demonstrate more and more the need to confirm to their definition of beauty.

Maybe if Miss Universe had a wider range of body types.
And celebrations of beauty.

Take away their heads and you'll see the same body type and the same beauty stylings on each and every single contestant. Hairstyles, racial traits and talents may differ, but everyone seems to try to be the same kind of woman, waving in the same exact way, smiling with the same "perfect" smile.

All The Same.

I embrace individuality. I embrace identity. I embrace being brave enough to tell yourself "you are beautiful" and being willing to stand out and be different. Now I am sure there are those out there who will greatly disagree with me. Many would definitely say I missed the "point" of Miss Universe. Some would definitely harp about how Miss Universe is about reaching for one's dreams and knowing we can all "be better". But I will always say, "Being better" is not the same as "Being healthier". Wanting to work out because you care about your health and want to look more fit is fine and commendable. But doing it because you believe you are ugly unless you look like some beauty pageant contestant? Unacceptable.

Why indeed?

Ultimately, this is just me ranting about it. I don't get all the buzz and fuss over it. I don't get the excitement it supposedly contains. I guess for me, Miss Universe is like golf. Or the UAAP games. Ultimately, just not my thing.

Any this kind of thinking starts to become the norm.
Anyone who wants to celebrate being distinct rather than the same, is automatically labelled a negative thing.

So to all you fans who, for some reason are reading my blog, enjoy Miss Universe - Enjoy the show and I hope your "bet" wins. But please, don't try to convince me of the "virtues" of the show. You'd probably have a bigger chance turning me into a homophobic straight guy.

Yes, scientific affirmation at last.

Some question why the study is necessary.
Let me tell you this: I personally know people who believe my being bisexual is a "phase" or just me being afraid to be identified as gay. But whether they believe me or not is irrelevant to the fact that when I have feelings and sexual attraction to someone, it doesn't matter if they are male or female.

It is just sad how in the very community seeking to be accepted and respected as an equal, the said community tries to discriminate against bisexuals.

The Illusion of Perfection

I always thought he was cute.

Why is it that so many people, both gay and straight, are obsessed with this misunderstanding of what being perfect is? I was at O bar Ortigas earlier tonight, my favorite haunt, and was hanging with some dear friends when this subject came to mind. One of the new friends, you see, was a straight guy who was at O bar for the very first time in his entire life. He was quite a handsome guy, I must admit, with his goatee and his very social demeanor. He had the build suggesting a guy who probably loved basketball and was taller than most of the usual monkeys I see at the bar. At one point in the night, I was in a playful mood and was teasing him to one of the friends in the group who happened to be a girl. When I suggested the two of them would be a cute couple, his response made me stare at him in shock.

"Hindi no. Hindi ako pogi. Ang taba ko kaya?"
(Of course not. I'm not handsome. I happen to be so fat?"

I stared at him, shocked that someone would so willingly look down at himself and told him he was an attractive fellow. He might not match the overly hyped media image of the perfect guy: With the prominent chin-line, the perfect proportions and the evident six-pack of abdominal muscles. But he was still a handsome guy in his own right.

Have we so willingly allowed ourselves to hate how we look since we don't match the "ideal image" portrayed by the fashion industry and our mass media? Have we learned to hate our inner qualities so much that we cannot fathom we are beautiful people, whether or not we gym on a daily basis or treat food like some poisonous habit?

I asked him why he felt that way and his response was to tap his stomach and say,

I know some would think its unthinkable, but for me, he was cute before AND after.

"Wala. Mataba lang talaga ako."
(Oh nevermind. I just really am fat.)

And in response I reminded him that it wasn't a bad trait to have a tummy. There are many people out there who don't mind being with a person who fails to match the required image for a Bench model. There are many out there who actually would prefer to be with "a person" than a "model," so to speak.

It did make me wonder, however.

Why do we allow the fashion industry to tell us we are ugly?
Why do we allow magazines, fashion shows, television shows and billboards to tell us being imperfect means being ugly? Is it really that hard to celebrate being unique? Is it really that hard to realize we can be beautiful in our own way? Is it that impossible to fathom that there are people out there who will love us as ourselves, and not because we look like the newest big thing in the fashion industry?

This isn't really a new topic, I admit. But I feel sad that there are people out there who so willingly proclaim themselves to be ugly. What kind of a life would you live if you would so willingly label yourself in such a manner? If you want to work out or diet for the sake of being healthy, that's fine. But if you think working out is the only way you can be beautiful, I think there's something sorely wrong there.

We all are beautiful for someone who hasn't admitted it.

Admittedly, I have my moments of doubt too.

My partner, Rocky, who is the love of my life and makes me happy every single day, does have his own tastes when it comes to men. Just as I admittedly find BARA men attractive, Rocky does appreciate men who do work out. And admittedly, sometimes I wonder if I am good-looking enough for him, with my six pack (a proud trait I used to have from my competitive swimming) buried under a well cultivated tummy from our delight in cooking home cooked meals. Sometimes I wonder if he'd find me hotter if I found a way to shape up my chest and build up my arms. But while I do have plans (and have been working on reaching them) of being more fit and more athletic, I have no misconceptions of seeing myself as ugly. I don't think I'm gross or ugly. I know I could live a healthier life, and I know I haven't been the sporty sort to have the muscles that would make him see me as a candidate for a Sean Cody video. I know there I days I want him to literally hunger for me as if I was the best porn he has ever laid his eyes on. But I don't use that as a measure of my personal attractiveness. I simply know that he loves me, both physically, mentally and emotionally, because of who I am. And anything else is just gravy added to the dish.

I don't ever look at myself in the mirror and honestly think I am hideous.

And even if you aren't religious, know, you really are.

But it really bothers me that some people look at themselves and do.

I wish more people out there realize the innate beauty they possess. And realize somewhere out there, there are people who can see that beauty, even if they themselves can't. There's no harm in striving to be healthier. But I believe there is huge harm in telling yourself on a daily basis "I am ugly."

We are beautiful. While I don't think we are "perfect" as we are, since I am one of those who believes we can always strive to be better. To be more wonderful. I do believe that no one in this world is born to see themselves as ugly. We are unique and we are beautiful in ways only others can see.

And I hope someday, somehow, more people realize that.

Sex, Love or Friendship?

GG and me developed friendship first.

We allowed each other to get to know one another.

We saw each others strengths and weaknesses.

We saw and shared each other's passions and interests.

Mind you, we already were having feelings for one another, but rather than let feelings take charge in the start, we gave each other a chance to recognize each other's differences and similarities.

The love that bloomed eventually grew so strong, we had to admit we didn't want to be just friends.

And now, we're still together, and still getting stronger.

If you let friendship form before sex, the love that is created is a strong and pure one.

If you let sex come first before friendship, you'll confuse lust for love and eventually find yourself looking at other people, because you "think" you're in love again with someone else.

That's how I've seen it, that's how I've experienced it, and that's how I am honestly answering this question.

Sex does not equate a relationship. Or love.

It is just an act, anyone can do, with the right skills.

But love.
And friendship.

This is sooo true.

Those things need to be given time to bloom. To develop.

To strengthen.

And sex too soon can weaken the foundations that love and friendship take root on.
